Hon Steve Martin questions the Minister for Transport regarding inconsistencies in the timeline for retiring the A-series trains, specifically concerning platform upgrades and the rate of retirement. The Minister's answer vaguely links A-series retirement to C-series train delivery and B-series cascading.

I refer to the Minister's response to question on notice 601 in which it was explained that the intention is to retire the full A-series train fleet by the end of 2029, I note that the Minister stated in answer to Estimates questions that no A-series trains have been retired yet, and I also note that the business case for the unfunded program to make the C-series trains compatible with the heritage lines says that the A-series was to be phased into retirement "by 2026", and I ask: (a) can the Minister please explain the shifting timing of the phasing out of the A-series trains, including: (i) the date the platforms will be upgraded by; and (ii) the expected yearly rate of retirement to 2029 for approximately 48 two-car A-series railcars?

(a)        The delivery of more C-Series trains to operate on the Mandurah and Yanchep Lines will allow B-Series trains to cascade onto other lines.
This will allow for the progressive retirement of the A-Series trains, with the final A-Series set to be retired in late 2029.
