Dr. Pettitt questions the government about projected WA carbon emissions and requests the tabling of modelling data. The government acknowledges climate change efforts but avoids directly answering the questions, citing ongoing policy development and future emissions projections release.

CARBON EMISSIONS — WESTERN AUSTRALIA
284. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the parliamentary secretary representing the
Minister for Climate Action:
I refer to the article ''Surge
in WA emissions puts Australia's net zero targets in doubt'' in The
Guardian on 25 March 2024.
(1) Is it true
that modelling results presented to the state government last year showed that
WA's carbon emissions in 2024 are on track to reach 91.5 million tonnes
of carbon dioxide equivalent, or about 20 per cent above 2005 levels?
(2) Will the government table a copy
of the modelling mentioned in the article?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
On behalf of the Minister for
Climate Action, I provide the following answer.
(1)–(2) The WA government is serious about tackling
climate change and achieving net zero emissions by 2050, as well as playing a role
in the global energy transition through renewable hydrogen, critical minerals
and gas.
Western Australia's
decarbonisation pathway will look different from other jurisdictions as we
deliver our objective of transitioning the state's economy to net zero
emissions and support the decarbonisation of our key trading partners through
our exports. Modelling is conducted by the state and commonwealth governments
based on the best available information at the time of modelling, and
assumptions and information that is subject
to change. Western Australia's projections to 2024 and beyond will be
evaluated considering state and commonwealth policy initiatives,
including the national net zero plan, which is currently in development by the commonwealth Department of Climate
Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
The Western Australian government
will release emissions projections as part of setting interim targets, which
are required under the Climate Change Bill 2023, as soon as is practicable
after national targets are set for 2035. This approach to publication of
emissions analysis is consistent with the approaches of other Australian
jurisdictions.
