I refer to the Budget papers page 363 and 364, regarding Transportable Classrooms, and ask -
(1) Why has very little been spent this year, with $4 048 000 budgeted for next year, and then in New Works is that another $4.5 million next year, and $4.5 million each year in the forward estimates?
(2) Does this mean $8.5 million will be spent on transportables next year?
(3) How many transportables will the Government acquire next financial year?
(4) Why have transportable, rather than permanent classrooms, been chosen?

(1) Schools received additional classrooms during 2010 as a result of the Building the Education Revolution Program, resulting in reduced demand to construct new transportables. The annual budget for transportables of around $4.5m is based on previous experience and estimated demand.
(2) The Budget provides for $8.548m in 2010-11. The estimated cost of transportable classrooms already under construction is $2.5m and additional transportables may need to be constructed according to demand.
(3) The Department is currently assessing its requirements for 2011-12.
(4) Transportable classrooms are a component of the Department's asset management strategy enabling the Department to cater for fluctuations in student enrolment in the short to medium term and guard against long-term over provision of fixed permanent facilities.
