Developing and securing water supplies in the Pilbara has been identified as a priority in the Department of Water's (DoW) 2008 Pilbara Regional Water Plan.
Most of the water used by towns and port facilities is delivered through the West Pilbara (which includes Karratha, Dampier and Cape Lambert) and Port Hedland water supply schemes.
Given the variable water availability and the growing needs, Water Corporation and the DoW have been active in working with both industrial and domestic water users to improve water use efficiency.
The current water supply for the West Pilbara is adequate as the Harding Dam and the Millstream aquifer were filled by large flood events in February 2009.
The DoW and Water Corporation are investigating next source options for both the West Pilbara and Port Hedland Schemes.
The development of water and waste water services in the Pilbara will be in support of the "Pilbara Cities" blueprint where the State Government is acting quickly to fulfil its election commitments to meet not just the anticipated short term pressures, but to secure the Pilbara's future long after the resources sector has reached its peak.
