(1)–(2) Western Australia's strategic
importance was the topic of discussion in the White House earlier this week.
Following those talks, the world is now more aware than ever of Western
Australia's value. That can only be a good thing for jobs and investment
attraction. Thanks to the pragmatic diplomacy of the federal government, we,
the strongest economy in the nation, now have a formal agreement with the
largest economy in the world. It is an agreement on a path forward for AUKUS
and on our role in strengthening the supply of critical minerals and rare
earths to the global supply chains. This is a big responsibility for WA. More
than that, it is a massive opportunity. It is generational opportunities like
this that underscore the important and urgent need of our State Development
Bill because projects will come in fast and they will need to be handled
swiftly and appropriately. The State Development Bill will be instrumental to
that. As the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia, Aaron
Morey, put it yesterday, the bill is critical to unblocking major projects in
mining and other sectors. I quote Mr Morey, who said:
This Bill is seeking to
dramatically slash red tape in WA and aims to fast-track major projects in
clean energy, defence and other sectors …
This will create well-paid jobs
for WA workers and draw investment into the state, driving diversification in
our economy.
As the Director of Policy and Advocacy
at the Chamber of Minerals and Energy, Anita Logiudice, put it, the bill is:
… vital to speed up WA's
energy transition and pave the way for new industries including green iron,
critical minerals processing and low-emission fuels.
"The energy transition is a
golden opportunity to grow WA's industrial and manufacturing capabilities and
add thousands of well-paying jobs to our economy ..."
These words from industry
leaders speak for themselves. We have three big opportunities before us. One is
to get out of coal-fired power generation faster than any other Australian
state and set up our economy for success in a world that is decarbonising. The
second is to support our major trading partners to decarbonise with critical
minerals and clean downstream products like green iron. The third is to become
the largest naval shipbuilding and maintenance hub in the Southern Hemisphere.
We want to grasp these opportunities so that we do not miss out.
The State Development Bill is a
priority for my government to pass through the Legislative Council this year.
As we enter the new year, we want all the tools available to us to unlock these
economic opportunities for Western Australia to deliver the clean energy
transition and become a renewable energy powerhouse and to deliver AUKUS and diversify
our economy for the future so that we remain the strongest economy in the
nation and the best place in the world to get a quality job.
