DRIVING TESTS - PRACTICAL
(1) Is the minister aware of public discontent about waiting times for practical driving tests at metropolitan licensing centres? (2) Has the department adopted a maximum waiting time as a performance target; if so, what is being achieved; and, if not, what performance targets or key performance indicators are in place? (3) Is it the case that driving schools are permitted to book blocks of examination timeslots months in advance and without providing a client’s name, thereby shutting out private bookings? (4) If at the time the answer to this question was being composed an individual were to seek a booking for a driving test, when would be the next available appointment be at - (a) Willagee; (b) Rockingham; and (c) Kelmscott? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure advises - (1) Yes. That is why the minister has arranged for the Department for Planning and Infrastructure to recruit an additional seven contract driver assessors. The existing assessors are already working overtime. (2) Yes. Eligible applicants in the metropolitan area would be able to book an assessment within three weeks. The impact of the nationally agreed overseas driver’s licence recognition scheme has absorbed what benefit accrued from the recruitment of 10 extra assessors earlier this year. (3) Yes, for heavy vehicle bookings only. (4) As at 15 September, the first available assessment dates are: at Willagee, 5 February 2007; at Rockingham, 11 December 2006; and at Kelmscott, 20 January 2007. The first available assessment dates vary daily, and it is anticipated that these wait times will reduce markedly with the recruitment of the additional assessors and the continued use of overtime.
