I refer the minister to the press release from the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure regarding the Yarragadee aquifer, dated 18 March 2003, in which reference is made to the Water and Rivers Commission. Will the minister table the commission’s advice on the matter, and if not, why not? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Minister for the Environment and Heritage has provided the following response - The Water and Rivers Commission has been actively working with Bowman Bishaw Gorham, the consultants employed by the City of Armadale and the Western Australian Planning Commission to identify the likely sources of water able to meet the requirement of the development. The commission made available to the consultants the recently developed Perth regional aquifer modelling systemto estimate the likely impacts of taking large quantities of water from the various aquifers found in the vicinity of the development. Preliminary computer modelling suggests that bores tapping the Yarragadee aquifer are able to meet the water requirements of the lakes with acceptable impacts. The commission agreed with the consultants that an investigation bore should be drilled into the Yarragadee aquifer to confirm the impacts estimated by the computer modelling simulation. I table the advice provided by the commission to the consultants on 9 January 2003. [See paper No 947.]
