I draw the attention of the minister to the fact that approximately 90 gigalitres of treated waste water is being poured into the Indian Ocean every year, which equates to twice the expected saving achieved by water restrictions every year. Does the minister have any views on how this water can be better utilised, other than pumping it out into the sea? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS
AnswerView source ↗
Yes, I do. The Government through the Water Corporation and hopefully other organisations hopes to make greater use of waste water, so that the demands on scheme water will not be as great. The Government intends to set a formal target for the use of waste water. It may be of interest to the House to note that the Water Corporation is expanding its activities in Kwinana to ensure that greater use is made of waste water.
