(2) While currently underway, the completion of the updated Western Australian State Tourism Satellite Account has been rescheduled to December 2006. This delay is in the long-term interests of the Western Australian tourism industry, so that it can be rolled into a national research initiative involving all States and Territories across Australia. Following discussions with each of the State and Territory Tourism Organisations, it was identified that there was a lack of consistency in the Tourism Satellite Account methodologies being employed across Australia. This meant that the Tourism Satellite Accounts from different States and Territories were not directly comparable, and were unlikely to add up to the National Tourism Satellite Account produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Therefore, with the long term interests of the Western Australian tourism industry in mind, Tourism Western Australia initiated formal discussions between all State and Territory Tourism Organisations and the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre. Tourism Western Australia also continued to champion the need for a cooperative national research initiative, in which all the State and Territory Tourism Organisations agreed to combine resources and commission the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre to undertake Tourism Satellite Accounts for all States and Territories across Australia. This work is based on an internationally recognised methodology consistent with the Australian Bureau of Statistics National Tourism Satellite Account. Each of the updated Tourism Satellite Accounts will be based on 2003-04 financial year data, to coincide with the latest available National Tourism Satellite Account produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Subsequent updates will be provided every two to three years, in accordance with Australian Bureau of Statistics national updates. In recognition of Tourism Western Australia's leadership in this joint agreement with Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre, Western Australia will be the first State Tourism Satellite Account scheduled for completion in December 2006.
