ESPERANCE LEAD POLLUTION - TRANSPORT OF LEAD CARBONATE
Given that lead carbonate is formally described as a poisonous white pigment that contains lead, and that the minister must have played some role in approving its transport through the communities of Kalgoorlie, Norseman and the port of Esperance, I ask - (1) Given that the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure oversees transport, why did the minister not give the residents of Esperance the opportunity to veto the export of lead carbonate through the port? (2) Why did the minister fail to take more of an interest in the transportation of this potentially dangerous material? (3) Why did the minister fail to stipulate inspections along the 900-kilometre journey to ensure that the purported 12 per cent moisture in the lead carbonate was maintained? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(3) I had no role to play at all in terms of any approvals at any stage in this process. Indeed, members opposite should be aware that the transportation of dangerous goods does not fall within my portfolio.
