FIRE
AND EMERGENCY SERVICES — TECHNICIANS
1142. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to the ongoing and significant staff shortages within
the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for mechanical and
auto-electrical technicians and to Legislative Council question without notice
1002 asked on 12 September.
(1) Given the
impact of these long-term vacancies on fleet preparedness and safety, why was
neither role advertised on the DFES corporate website or the Jobs WA website as
of 10.00 am today?
(2) When and
where were the positions last publicly advertised?
(3) How does
the government expect vacancies to be filled when the positions are not
publicly advertised?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises the following.
(1)–(3) These roles are advertised on the DFES
corporate website. The state government and DFES have negotiated a higher
rate of pay for these roles to improve the attraction rate of applicants to the
positions and retention of staff once employed by DFES.
Hon Martin Aldridge interjected.
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON : A new recruitment campaign will
recommence once the 2022 DFES fleet and equipment services agreement is
registered on 22 September 2023.
Hon Martin Aldridge : Oopsie!
The PRESIDENT : Order!
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON : Not at
all ''Oopsie'', honourable member; it is already happening. Wake
up!
