I refer to the State Government Policy
Vital Volunteering
2011–2016
and to the commitment in it to reduce the financial burden on organisations of national police checks for volunteers and working with children checks, and I ask:
(a) what is the estimated total cost of each of these checks to volunteer organisations in Western Australia;
(b) what is the proposed level of subsidy to volunteer organisations;
(c) when will this be introduced;
(d) what will the total cost of this subsidy be to government; and
(e) is it proposed to review whether all volunteer organisations currently requiring working with children checks should continue to do so?

(a) Vital Volunteering 2011-2016 outlines a commitment that the state government will deliver a range of strategies to support volunteering.  This includes continuing support to subsidise the cost of criminal history checks for volunteers and volunteer organisations.  The state and Australian governments collaborate to provide subsidised National Police Checks at $11.50 per volunteer and Working with Children Checks at $10 per volunteer. In addition the state government provides free National Police Checks for volunteers where required by their volunteer organisation, when they are also required to hold a Working with Children Check.
(b) The state government is not planning additional subsidies for National Police and Working with Children Checks which are already heavily subsidised.
(c) Not applicable
(d)  Not applicable
(e) A review of the
Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004
is currently underway, as required by statute.  In accordance with due process, the review will be tabled in Parliament.
