A parliamentary question probes the inclusion of 'schools in Cottesloe' on a list of individual schools slated for upgrades and maintenance, implying preferential treatment due to it being the Premier's electorate. The Minister's response deflects, citing past neglect and promising future prioritisation.

SCHOOLS — UPGRADES AND MAINTENANCE
I refer to papers that the minister tabled during questions without notice on Wednesday, 12 November and to the list of schools for upgrades and maintenance promised by the Liberal Party as part of the recent election campaign. (1) Why does the list of 29 individual schools also contain a listing for schools in Cottesloe? (2) Has the electorate of Cottesloe been given the whiteboard treatment because it is the Premier’s electorate? (3) Which schools in Cottesloe are to receive the funding, or is it all schools in Cottesloe? Dr E. CONSTABLE

(1)-(3) One of the problems we have with older schools is that the former government neglected upgrades and maintenance on them. I can speak from experience because many schools in my electorate had been neglected during the past seven years. As I mentioned last week, I visited five schools in the member for Alfred Cove’s electorate, and once again I saw five schools that had been neglected over the past few years. Some old schools of more than 100 years old have not had necessary work done on them; have roofs that need work; have septic tanks that need to be got rid of and connected to sewerage; and so on and so forth. I am aware that many schools in the electorate of Cottesloe are old and need upgrades. An opposition member: What; all of them? Dr E. CONSTABLE : Not all schools; some schools. In the following four years priorities will be set for the extra funds that were committed at the last election for new schools and upgrades. An allocation of $12.5 million will be spent each financial year on upgrades of schools that need them. I am sure that one or two schools in Cottesloe will definitely need upgrades, and they will get them when the priorities have been set.
