I refer to previous questions
regarding the control of pests by Main Roads WA on land it controls.
(1) What
discussions have taken place between Main Roads WA and the Shire of Esperance
regarding rabbits breeding on its reserves
near Esperance since the minister answered question without notice 1241 last
year?
(2) What actions
have been undertaken by Main Roads to quantify the extent of the problem and
provide a solution to the problem to ensure that it complies with its
obligations under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) Main Roads
initiated discussions with the Shire of Esperance and the Department of
Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions in January 2023. Additional discussions
with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will occur
in March 2023.
(2) Main Roads is
aware of its responsibility under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management
Act 2007. It should be noted that rabbit control requires a coordinated
approach to be successful over the local area, with adjacent landowners, the
shire and DPIRD all working in tandem.
