Data regarding information about people who are referred to, or seek assistance from, specialist homelessness services agencies is collated by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and published in its Specialist Homelessness Services Annual Report.
In 2018-19, specialist homelessness services funded by the Department of Communities reported:
(a) 37 per cent of clients were male.
(b) 63 per cent of clients were female.
(c) 44 per cent of clients identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
(d) 29 per cent were under the age of 18 years.
(e) 18 per cent were under the age of 10 years.
(f) 43 per cent of clients reported experiencing family and domestic violence.
Clients are counted as experiencing family and domestic violence where domestic and family violence was reported as a reason they sought assistance, or they required family and domestic violence assistance during a period where they received support.
