TAXIS — UBER — METROPOLITAN
REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY SPONSORSHIP
260. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
statement on 9 October last year when he said in relation to Uber that there
are aspects that are outside the law and the Minister for Transport is dealing
with that, and to the fact that the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority is
promoting Uber through a sponsored event on its website.
(1) Why has the
Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority promoted the use of Uber, including a $30
free ride to the Perth Cultural Centre?
(2) Considering the Premier's
views about Uber, why has the government taken so long to act?

(1)–(2) My
general view is that users of taxi services deserve a choice. They should be
entitled to that, so long as issues such as passenger safety in particular and
any other issues that relate to it are addressed. But the question is not in my
portfolio.
Mr
M. McGowan : You are the Premier.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : I am; I intend to stay there, too.
A question about Uber surely should
be to the Minister for Transport.
Ms
M.M. Quirk : He was not listening to the question; he was talking.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Because the question was addressed to me, incorrectly.
Mr
M. McGowan : You are the Premier; you made the comment.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : I am the Premier. There are 17 ministers—myself
included. If the Leader of the Opposition seriously wants an answer to that
question, he should ask the Minister for Transport. If he wants to know about
the role of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, ask the Minister for
Planning.
