ROEBOURNE POLICE AND CITIZENS YOUTH CLUB
I refer to the important role that police and citizens youth clubs play in engaging children who might otherwise get involved in crime and antisocial behaviour and to threats earlier this year to close the Roebourne Police and Citizens Youth Club. (1) Has the minister been approached by the Minister for Police to find a way to keep this club open? (2) If so, what was the outcome of that discussion and will the Roebourne PCYC remain open? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) No. (2) Not applicable. However, having said that, I went and found out some information. Hon Sue Ellery : Minister, will you take an interjection, because he told others he was going to raise it with you earlier this year? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY : No, to the best of my recollection, I have never heard that. However, as I said, I went and got some extra information after getting the answer back. An amount of $500 000 has been provided to Yandina Family Services, Roebourne Youth Centre for construction and fit-out of a youth centre for the town of Roebourne to provide a range of social services, education, entertainment and other engagement in a highly disadvantaged group within the community. Separate from that, there was $197 500 for Roebourne Cultural Complex stage 1. That was to construct the amphitheatre component of the Roebourne Cultural Complex project to be used by the community for concerts, movies, bands, performing artists, musicians et cetera. So a lot of money has been going into Roebourne. Hon Sue Ellery : Sorry; can you just take another interjection? That first bit that you referred to, is that for the purposes of the PCYC, or is that a completely separate project? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY : As I said, that is the answer I got, and I believe that this is a totally new youth centre. I cannot answer the Leader of the Opposition’s question about whether it was for the PCYC, but it seems to me that they would not put that much money in and have two centres operating side by side. But I can get back to the Leader of the Opposition on that one.
