(2) Yes, I am aware of their claims. (3) No. I do not believe that a public inquiry into these claims will assist in resolving the matter. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in association with community representatives, Alcoa and the Health Department is undertaking further monitoring to try to identify the cause of the community complaints. The DEP is also working with Alcoa to further reduce emissions from the refinery which are known to be associated with the odour, beyond the estimated 50% reduction already achieved over the last 18 months.
