(2) On how many occasions, since 2008, has the Western Australian Government rejected applications to expand production at iron ore mines that have been made by either: (a) Rio Tinto; (b) BHP Billiton; and (c) Fortesque Metals Group? (3) In
respect of each application approved by the Western Australian Government: (a) which mine site did the application relate to; and (b) what was the
production increase (tonnage) that was requested in each case? (4) Other
than Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and FMG, on how many other occasions, since 2008,
has the Western Australian Government given approval for the expansion of iron ore production in Western Australia: (a) if applicable, who made the application(s); and (b) what was the
production increase (tonnage) requested in each case?

Department of State Development advises:
(1)-(a-c) Since 2008 Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and the Fortescue Metals Group have submitted
proposals pursuant to their State Agreements resulting in an approved expanded production of about 247 million tonnes per annum.
(2)-(a-c) The proposals have been considered in accordance with statutory requirements.
(3)-(a-c) Applications have been received pursuant to the following State Agreements:
BHP Billiton
Iron Ore (Mt Goldsworthy) Agreement Act 1965
;
Iron Ore (McCamey's Monster) Agreement Authorisation Act 1973
;
Iron Ore (Marillana Creek) Agreement Act 1991
; and
Iron Ore (Mount Newman) Agreement Act 1964.
Rio Tinto
Iron Ore (Robe River) Agreement Act 1964
:
Iron Ore (Hamersley Range) Agreement Act 1963
;
Iron Ore (Hope Downs) Agreement Act 1992
; and
Iron Ore (Yandicoogina) Agreement Act 1996.
Fortescue Metals Group (FMG)
Iron Ore (FMG Chichester Pty Ltd) Agreement Act 2006
FMG also operates additional mine sites under the
Mining Act 1978
.
(4)-(a-b) Proposals have been received pursuant to the
Iron Ore Processing
(Mineralogy Pty Ltd) Agreement Act 2002
resulting in the approval to export 27.6 million tonnes per annum of iron ore product.
The
Mining Act 1978
does not mandate iron ore production rates from mine sites administered under that Act.
