I refer to the Myer report into visual arts, whereby an agreement was made between the federal and State Governments to match funding. (1) What level of funding has the State Government committed to the Myer report? (2) What percentage of this funding will be drawn from the existing 2003 budget for the arts and what percentage will be entirely new funding dedicated to this sector? Hon KEN TRAVERS

On behalf of the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Culture and the Arts, I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) This State Government has already committed more funding than is required to meet the State’s share of the matching funding under the original Myer formula Hon Barbara Scott: How much? Hon KEN TRAVERS: I am glad that the member has finally woken up after four years of being asleep when she was involved with these matters in the former Government. She was completely silent. In recognising the reduced commonwealth contribution - two-thirds of the original Myer proposal; that is, $19.5 million over four years for the whole sector - the State is well placed to receive the full extent of any commonwealth commitment. (2) The detail of the State’s funding component is not yet finalised because negotiations with the Commonwealth are still in process. However, it should be noted that the WA Government has delivered. Commencing in 2002-03, the State Government will contribute $491 080 per annum of new and recurrent funding to this sector. This is in addition to the recurrent base funding previously provided by the State to this sector, and will attract the matching commonwealth funds proposed by the Myer report.
