WOMEN, BODY IMAGE 297. Mrs MARTIN to the Minister for Women’s Interests: An article in The West Australian on Tuesday highlighted the adverse effects on women of the notion of the ideal body image portrayed in the media. Will the minister inform the House of any recent initiatives that may address this issue? Ms McHALE

I thank the member for the question and her interest in this issue. Yesterday I launched a new booklet entitled “Female, Young and Active” at a gathering of more than 1 200 schoolgirls from 74 schools throughout the metropolitan area. This booklet provides information to young women about body image, health and wellbeing and managing stress and how to cope with very difficult situations. It was written by young women for young women and was a joint initiative by Womensport West, the Department for Community Development, the women’s policy office and Healthway. I thank the Ministers for Health and Education for their support. Ten thousand copies of this booklet will be available and distributed through schools, youth organisations and libraries. When there are worrying trends in increases such as anorexia and depression among young women, combating the notion of the ideal body image is a key priority for us all. I commend this booklet to members. I commend it particularly to the young women in the gallery today. I am happy to make the booklet available for the information of members so that they can also distribute it.
