SIR CHARLES GAIRDNER HOSPITAL — INCIDENTS
676. Ms L. METTAM to the Minister for Health:
I have a supplementary question. If
our health system is so well resourced, as the minister continually states, why
do we have horror story after horror story happening under the minister's
watch?

These two incidents are incredibly
unfortunate. We are seeing an increase in elderly patients coming into our
hospitals, often with delirium or dementia-like symptoms. They should be
treated appropriately, and that is what should have happened. It did not happen
in this case. We have more than two million episodes of care across our health
system; we always want every single episode to be excellent, and I know that
our staff —
Ms L. Mettam interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please!
Ms A. SANDERSON : I know that
our staff strive to provide excellent care and will be devastated by this
outcome. I am going to give them the opportunity to respond to the
investigation before I make any public assertions or assumptions. I am going to
make sure that my comments are informed by all the facts, in fairness to all
parties.
