I ask a supplementary question. Will the minister undertake to advise this House by the close of business today of the percentage of all police stations in Western Australia that are operating below their authorised strength, without naming them? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

The member for Kalgoorlie has again indicated that he has no idea. I am not briefed on how many officers are at individual police stations on a daily basis, and nor do I expect to be. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: Nor was the member for Darling Range or any other police minister. Mr M.J. Birney interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, member for Kalgoorlie! Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: This is a great news story because when I asked the question when I sat opposite - Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: When I sat opposite, often the story was that the whole Police Service was operating under authorised strength. My clear advice from the Commissioner of Police is that over the past few months, at the close of business each day - I tabled the statistics yesterday - the Police Service has operated above its authorised strength. This State has never had so many police officers or so much money at the Commissioner of Police’s disposal. I put it on the record that we have the highest police-to-population ratio of any State in Australia.
