METRONET — RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSINGS
358. Ms C.M. ROWE to the Minister for Transport:
I
refer to the record $4.1 billion investment in job-creating Metronet projects,
including funding to start work on removing dangerous level crossings on the
Armadale line. Can the minister outline to the house how these job-creating
projects will benefit motorists in the southern and eastern suburbs, and
provide a boost to the Western Australian economy?

Mr P.C. Tinley : Good
question.
The SPEAKER : Minister!
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Thank you
very much.
I thank the member for Belmont for that question. Of course,
in this state budget is record investment in Metronet and rail spending in Western
Australia. It is a significant investment, but it is about WA for the future,
and it is about transforming our suburbs and our city. There are a number of projects
that are now well advanced. There is over $1 billion for the Thornlie and
Yanchep lines, with that tender out to the market and construction to start
this year. Of course, on Denny Avenue, which is a project that I know the
member for Armadale has advocated for a long time, our good friend the member
for Burt was out there with us yesterday, member for Armadale, talking about
the real investment on the ground, which we are seeing already, with forward
works happening, and, of course, that project going out to expressions of
interest for the new level crossing at Davis Road. We have the new Bayswater
Station works, member for Bayswater, with $146 million for works at Bayswater
Station. We have money for level crossing removals at Oats, Mint and Welshpool
Roads, and planning is underway for Wharf Street and those level crossings in
the Cannington area. These projects are now going into the next phase of
delivery.
This budget basically, again, keeps
the commitment that we gave to Western Australians on Metronet. When we commit
to projects, we go out and deliver. Compare that with the MAX light rail
project, which the previous government had put on its books and made no
election commitment on. There is so much more to be done. But we are out there,
delivering that investor certainty, delivering those jobs for Western Australians,
and transforming the suburbs of Western Australia.
