SWAN RIVER
PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE — FABRICATION
488. Mr F.M. LOGAN to the
Minister for Transport:
I ask a supplementary question. The Western Australian
fabrication and engineering industries are experiencing their worst downturn in
over 20 years and desperately need work. Why, during the public announcement of
the bridge, was it not confirmed that the bridge would be made in WA, like the
stadium?

Again, I really appreciate the question because this
government knows very well the difficulties that have been faced by the
construction industry. That is why we have not backed off on the construction
that is going on in these difficult times. We are seeing a record level of investment
in this state through the Department of Transport. We are seeing a record level
of construction of roads. I can name them all if the member wants—the
Gateway WA project, Perth Freight Link and NorthLink WA. We are creating
thousands and thousands of jobs as a result of the work that this government is
doing.
Point of Order
Mrs
M.H. ROBERTS : It was a very simple preliminary question and a very
simple supplementary question: is the bridge being manufactured in Western
Australia? That is the only question we really want an answer to.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : Mr Speaker, I think the question was based on the
premise of the downturn of work in this state and what was being done.
Ms M.M. Quirk interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the first
time. Short answer, please, minister. Thank you.
