I refer to the Broome Regional Prison, and I ask: (a) can the Minister please explain the philosophy for the site; (b) does the Minister intend to increase the use of the facility to its full capacity; (c) at full capacity, how many prisoners can be held at any one time; (d) how many prisoners are currently being held there; (e) will the prison be renovated, refurbished or upgraded; (f) what key maintenance issues have been identified; (g) when will the improvements to the facility likely to occur; (h) what is the estimated cost involved to complete the necessary works on the prison so that it can be used at full capacity; (i) were these costs identified in the 2016/2017 budget; (j) how many staff are currently employed based at the Broome Prison; (k) of these staff, how many are Aboriginal; and (l) how many staff are needed to operate the prison when functioning at full capacity?

The Department of Corrective Services advises:
(a) At present the facility functions as a short term/transit facility, housing remand males (up to 28 days), minimum security sentenced males (to support work camp preparation/visits and community reintegration), and remand and sentenced females (short term to support visits and community reintegration).
(b) The Department is currently determining the future role of the facility.
(c) 117 (total capacity).
(d) 56, as at 12:30pm on 9 September 2016.
(e)-(i) The future role and function of the facility is currently being determined and this will inform any future renovations, refurbishments, upgrades and budget applications.
(j) 45.8 FTE
(k) 3 FTE
(l) Once the future role and function of the facility is determined, this will inform future staffing needs.
