I refer to an article on Gracetown’s future titled “Minister scuppers rapid growth plan” that appeared in The West Australian on 31 January 2002. (1) What is meant by the terms - (a) areas available for the broader community; (b) environmentally sensitive tourist development; and (c) reasonable parameters on which to base planning for the town’s future? (2) Do these terms open up the possibility for - (a) a public caravan park; (b) short-stay residential; (c) residential; (d) commercial; or (e) hotel developments to be included in future plans for Gracetown? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) Planning context for Gracetown is established by the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge Statement of Planning Policy 1988. Any further plans for future development of Gracetown will include consideration of the environmental and landscape values, building form, availability of services, effluent management, social impact, bushfire protection and conservation of the ridge values. It is important that future uses allow for broader community access to accommodation and the coast. The minister is certainly interested in exploring the possibility of developing moderately priced holiday accommodation that embraces environmentally sensitive design. (2) The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure recently visited Gracetown and met with residents. The minister assured them that any future planning would entail full public consultation and wider community input and that the full planning process would identify appropriate uses.
