MIRRABOOKA LIBRARY —
INNOVATION LAB
472. Hon COLIN TINCKNELL to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Culture and the Arts:
I note that a media release put out
by the Minister for Culture and the Arts, Hon David Templeman, dated 11 June 2018
referred to the establishment of an innovation lab at Mirrabooka Library.
(1) What analysis
was undertaken before selecting Mirrabooka Library as the location of the
innovation lab?
(2) What
strategies and safeguards have been put in place to maintain the equipment and
prevent damage and theft?
(3) Aside from
the hub's 3D printers and robotics, what other items and/or technologies
make up the ''other technology'' mentioned in the media release?
(4) How does the
establishment of the innovation lab translate into the creation of more local
jobs?
(5) How many new
jobs have been created by the Local Projects, Local Jobs initiative in the last
12 months?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) The project
was identified by the local member as an initiative prior to the election and
in consideration of community need.
(2) The
responsibility for security and maintenance of the items rests with the City of
Stirling.
(3) Other technology
and items included a monochrome laser printer; a NAO robot; a 3D printer; small
unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones; a virtual reality headset; synthesisers
compatible with an iMac Pro; microphones; and a sewing machine to complement
the in-kind provision of a laser cutter machine and associated consumables from
a local company.
(4)–(5)
The Minister for Culture and the Arts is responsible for only a portion of the
overall Local Projects, Local Jobs program. This project creates a space for
the Mirrabooka community that is responsive to the latest technological
equipment, providing opportunities for the people in the whole community to
build their capacity, connectivity, digital literacy, lifelong learning and
social connection that are essential for successful employment in a modern
economy.
