I thank the member for Kimberley for her question and for her strong advocacy of sporting opportunities for people throughout the Kimberley region. The state government recognises the important role that sport plays in developing communities and holding them together and in producing a range of values. Sport can be the cement that holds communities together. The Department of Sport and Recreation has initiated a range of initiatives in the Kimberley. For example, it is about to open a new office in Broome. The position involved has been advertised and I understand that interviews are about to begin. In terms of capital expenditure, $2.9 million has been allocated to the construction of the Halls Creek pool and recreation centre and $1.2 million has been allocated to stage 2 of the Broome recreation complex. Funding has also been allocated to a skate park in Derby and a feasibility study for a pool in Fitzroy Crossing, which is in electorate of a fellow government member. Right through the Kimberley the government is providing sports resources. As what happens on the ground is also important, funding has been allocated to joint operations. For example, I refer to the employment of a Garnduwa trainee in Halls Creek and the program in Kalumburu that seeks to develop the skills of local people so that they can run a sporting program. In a range of centres throughout the Kimberley the government is seeking to provide access to sport and to provide support so that people can engage in sport, which is a real fillip to many of the communities scattered throughout the Kimberley.
