NATIVE
TITLE SETTLEMENTS — FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FUNDING
294. Mr B.S. WYATT to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. In light of the fact that
the Premier described this as the greatest disappointment of his political
life, does he intend to continue to pursue the federal government so that
Western Australia gets a proper agreement from the commonwealth government
about all native title settlements so that we can go forward and settle other
native title claims as well?

The matter is being pursued. I am not hopeful in the short
term that the commonwealth government will give more. Over the course of the
agreement, it may, but the matter is certainly being pursued —
Mr M. McGowan : The
Prime Minister for Indigenous Australia!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
The Leader of the Opposition can ask a question about it—ask him.
We are certainly pursuing that. Even at a minimum—I
would accept this—I think the commonwealth should meet half the cost.
We would go 50–50. I think that would be a reasonable outcome.
