DONGARA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL BUILDINGS — MOULD SPORES
I refer to the current state of many of the classrooms at Dongara District High School, where dilapidated transportables are creating serious health risks. (1) Is the minister aware of the plight of Tova Ethell, a year 7 student on the campus of Dongara District High School who has been forced to undertake all her studies at home due to continual coughing fits associated with studying in the school’s buildings, which contain mould spores in ceilings, floors, walls and air conditioners? (2) What does the minister say to parents of students at the school whose children are in rooms that leak rainwater into light fittings? (3) What does the minister say to Tova Ethell’s mother, who has had to give up her permanent job to stay at home to teach her daughter through the Schools of Isolated and Distance Education because of his government’s inability to meet basic requirements in the provision of safe and healthy learning environments? Mr M. McGOWAN

(1)-(3) No, I am not aware of the plight of Tova Ethell. However, I understand that the Department of Education and Training is aware that a student at the school has been suffering from asthma attacks over a number of days. An officer from the department will be visiting the school tomorrow to inspect the condition of the transportable classrooms.
