carbon emissions produced by Collie coal-fired electricity plants.
(1) What percentage of global carbon emissions
result from the burning of coal for electricity generation in Western
Australia?
(2) By what percentage will global carbon
emissions reduce if the government closes WA coal-fired power stations in 2029,
taking into consideration increased gas electricity generation?

(1) Based on data published by the International
Energy Agency and the European Commission, this is estimated to equate to
approximately 0.012% of global emissions or 0.051% of global coal-related
emissions. Coal-fired power generation contributed to approximately 7.4% of
Western Australia's emissions in 2023.
(2) By 2029, when state-owned coal plants in the South
West Interconnected System (SWIS) are expected to be retired, annual emissions
in the SWIS are expected to reduce by around four million tonnes a year
compared with 2024. This represents a global reduction of around 0.008% based
on 2023 global emissions.
