FORESTS — LOGGING MORATORIUM
110. Dr J.M. WOOLLARD to the Minister for Environment:
Today is World Forest Day and today I handed the minister a
document containing more than 5 000 messages about the loss of the black
cockatoo, the numbat and other endangered species through logging and land
clearing.
(1) Can the minister please advise whether the government
will place a moratorium on logging in high conservation value forests including
the Arcadia, Warrup, Merribup, Koonan and Helms forests in order to protect our
native flora and fauna?
(2) Can the minister instruct Environmental Protection Authority
to conduct an audit of the endangered species identified to be at risk in these
forests?

I thank the member for Alfred Cove for some notice of the
question today at lunchtime.
(1) In answer to the first question about whether we will
place a moratorium on logging in high conservation value forests including a
number of these blocks, the answer is no; it is not being considered. We are
undertaking a forest management plan, as members are quite aware, and that will
consider all the conservation values around the forests.
(2) This question is: will I instruct the Environmental
Protection Authority to conduct an audit of the endangered species identified
to be at risk in these forests? As part of a forest management plan they will
be assessed by the EPA and I would imagine that all the conservation values
around the forest system will be properly assessed by the EPA and we will come
up with a very good plan.
