SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS
581. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH to the minister
representing the Minister for Training and Workplace Development:
(1) Can the
minister explain why the number of commencements of school-based
apprenticeships has fallen by 26 per cent in the 12-month period ending 30 June
2012?
(2) If no to (1), why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) As with all
apprenticeships, the number of commencements over any given period is dependent
upon demand from employers. The school-based apprenticeship program is very
small and the actual number of commencements for the 12 months ending 30 June
2012 was 162 compared with 219 commencements the previous year. While there
will always be some volatility from one year to the next with such a small
program, the department will continue to work with industry training councils
to identify potential strategies to encourage employers to increase the take-up
of school-based apprentices.
(2) Not applicable.
