The Country Medical Foundation provides scholarships to assist country medical students. Given the serious shortage of country doctors in Western Australia, will the minister consider providing badly needed financial assistance to this organisation? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Department of Health provided annual non-recurrent financial assistance towards the Country Medical Foundation scholarship program until 2001, when it was ceased after a review of all funding allocations to non-government organisations and the need to prioritise expenditure within the health budget. This decision was made as it was considered that the Country Medical Foundation had adequate invested funds to provide the scholarships without Department of Health financial assistance. Several organisations provide financial support to rural and remote practitioners, including the Country Medical Foundation, the Australian government and the Western Australia Centre for Rural and Remote Medicine. The Department of Health supports rural clinical students and country doctors by providing scholarships and professional development for post-graduate staff members. Currently the Department of Health’s Office of the Chief Nursing Officer offers a number of scholarships, sponsorships and fellowships that are open to all nurses and midwives working in the WA government health system. In 2004, 25 undergraduate rural and remote nurses received scholarships and in 2005, 13 have been awarded a scholarship.
