BURRINGURRAH COMMUNITY - POLICE FACILITIES
(1) Following the permanent closure of the Gascoyne Junction Police Station recently, will the minister advise whether the commonwealth government has offered funds to assist with the construction of a much-needed multifunction police station to serve the Burringurrah community? (2) If so, how much funding was offered; have any conditions been placed on the state receiving the money; and how much funding will the state government contribute towards the construction of the station? (3) Has the site for the police station been chosen; and, if so, does the minister envisage that there will be any problems associated with the acquisition of suitable land on which to build the police station? (4) When will the police station at Burringurrah be operational and how many police officers and support staff will be permanently stationed at the community? Hon JON FORD

I thank Hon Vince Catania for the question and for his huge interest in that part of the electorate.  The Minister for Police and Emergency Services has supplied the following answer - (1) Yes. (2) The commonwealth government provided a contribution of $20 million for the construction of three multifunction police facilities; three staff houses for government regional officers and a relieving officers’ quarters at Burringurrah, Looma and Wingelina; and a relieving officers’ quarters at Bidyadanga.  The applicable conditions are relevant to the memorandum of understanding between the state and commonwealth governments. (3) Yes.  The site has been chosen.  It is not envisaged that any problems will be encountered to prevent the acquisition of suitable land.  An in-principle agreement has been reached with the community.  Negotiations are in progress for the establishment of a ground lease. (4) The tender process is due to commence in January 2008.  The building is anticipated to be completed in March or April 2009.  Western Australia Police has advised that due to operational sensitivities, specific information relating to the staffing levels of individual police stations is not released.
