The minister has been reported as having expressed concern about the future of the National Crime Authority in Western Australia. I thank the member for her question. The member for Girrawheen’s commitment to the fight against organised crime is to be commended, as are her efforts to ensure that Western Australia is not denied the commonwealth resources that it deserves to combat crime. I wish that I could inform the member and the House that the federal budget has alleviated my concerns about the Commonwealth’s attempts to diminish the capacity of the NCA in Western Australia; however, I cannot. The budget papers confirmed that the Commonwealth is not committed to appropriately resourcing the NCA or its successor body, the Australian Crime Commission. The federal budget papers reveal that the funding allocation for the NCA/ACC is $59 488 000 in 2001-02, $62 606 000 in 2002-03, back to $50 659 000 in 2003-04, $52 121 000 in 2004-05 and $52 394 000 in 2005-06. The federal Government appears to have no interest in fighting organised crime. How can it be if its approach is to gut $52 million from the budget over the next few years? I will be seeking the assurance of Senator Ellison, a Western Australian senator, and the minister responsible, that this State will not be affected by those considerable cuts.
