POLYPHAGOUS SHOT-HOLE
BORER — EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN
1168. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the Minister for Agriculture and
Food:
I refer to the emergency response
plan currently being deployed to contain and eradicate the polyphagous shot-hole
borer.
(1) Has any consideration been given to transitioning
to a management approach, given the failure to eradicate the PSHB in
other countries?
(2) If no, why
not; and what decision point will lead to a change in approach?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The national Consultative Committee on Emergency
Plant Pests and the National Biosecurity Management Group have
determined that it is technically feasible and cost beneficial to eradicate the
polyphagous shot-hole borer from Australia.
These decisions are based on all available data and international experience with the pest and take into account available options.
(2) The
national response plan is subject to regular review by the CCEPP. These reviews
take into account efficiency and effectiveness of the response, and whether the
borer remains technically feasible and cost beneficial to eradicate. The CCEPP
is currently reviewing the response plan to develop the next iteration of the
plan.
