I thank the member for some notice of this question, which I answer on behalf of the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. The minister has provided the following response. (1) The East Perth Redevelopment Authority is the planning authority for the Perth Cultural Centre precinct, which includes the existing Western Australian Museum site. The Museum will continue operating on the site until 2015. EPRA will commence master planning for the area in the 2008-09 financial year, and will investigate a range of strategic options for the old Museum site, including a city university, artists’ spaces, exhibition space, boutique hotel, and residential and commercial uses. (2) EPRA has undertaken initial studies to explore broad concepts for potential new uses of the Perth Cultural Centre precinct only. (3) No alternative uses were considered for the Museum site in the initial studies. Detailed studies will be conducted as part of the master planning process for the Museum site. (4) Until master planning is completed, it is not possible to estimate potential revenues. The highest and best use for the site in terms of the best outcome for the public may not have the highest commercial return. (5) As the potential revenues of redeveloping the existing site have not been undertaken, a comparison cannot be made with the cost of procuring and redeveloping the East Perth power station site for the new Museum.
