❓ Hon. Kate Doust asks the Minister for Energy about the amount of CO2e emissions reductions required from WA energy producers to meet the former federal government's 2030 target. The Minister responds that specific state-level targets were not defined, making it impossible to determine the required contributions.

CARBON DIOXIDE EQUIVALENT EMISSIONS — STATE
ENERGY PRODUCERS
366. Hon KATE DOUST to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Energy:
I refer to the former federal Liberal government's commitment in
2005 to achieve a 26 per cent to 28 per cent reduction in CO 2 e emissions by 2030. In order for this reduction to be
achieved, how many tonnes of CO 2 e need to be saved
each year —
(a) in the south west interconnected network;
(b) by Horizon Power; and
(c) by off-grid energy producers in Western Australia?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
The former commonwealth government's
target for emissions reduction was a national target. Targets are set at a national
level to ensure reductions in emissions take place where it costs least to do
so, in terms of both location and sectors of the economy. The former
commonwealth government's target was not determined at a state or
territory level and did not require that specific entities reduce emissions by
definite amounts. It is not possible to determine what contribution would be
required by generators in the south west interconnected system, Horizon Power
and off-grid energy producers in order to meet this historical national target.
