Regarding the use of wooden railway sleepers for the re-sleepering of part of the Avon to Albany rail line, I ask -
(1) How many railway sleepers were commissioned for that rail line?
(2) How many were milled in Western Australia and at what mills?
(3) Who authorised the use of wooden railway sleepers?
(4) What is the process involved in the production of the railway sleepers to ensure that they comply with Australian standards for wooden railway sleepers?
(5) Do these sleepers comply with the relevant Australian Standards (including AS 3818.2)?
(6) If yes to (5), how do you know that they comply?
(7) How many have been delivered already?
(8) How many have been installed already and where?
(9) Is the Minister, or the Forest Products Commission, in negotiations with any other entity/entities seeking to buy native forest timber sleepers?
(10) Has the Minister or the Forest Products Commission entered into any other contract/s for sale of native forest timber sleepers?
(11) If yes to (9) and/or (10), will you please provide full details including but not limited to -
(a) the entities involved;
(b) the quantity of sleepers; and
(c) tree species affected?

(1) 184 353 sleepers in total, comprising 98 717 timber sleepers and 85 636 steel sleepers.
(2) All timber sleepers were milled in Western Australia at the following sawmills:
Redmond Sawmill
Chowerup Sawmill
Whiteland Milling; and
Australian Craftwood and Timbers.
(3) WestNet Rail as the lessee of the freight rail network.
(4) Sawmillers produce sleepers in accordance with specifications set by WestNet Rail. The sleepers are then inspected and certified by an officer of the Forest Products Commission and branded as meeting AS3818.2.

(6) Please refer to part (4).
(7) As at 30 June 2011, 72 870 sleepers have been delivered to site.
(8) As at 30 June 2011, 67 418 sleepers. The section between Wagin and Redmond has been completed as well as a 78.8km section of line from Avon.
