Lotterywest
(1) Lotterywest has no formal policies and procedures to provide assistance for staff members who are unable to read and write at the level they should. However, appropriate skills development programs would be arranged should a staff member be identified as requiring such assistance.
(2-3) Lotterywest's grant programs provide financial support for eligible organizations who offer assistance to those with low literacy skills. A specific example is a grant made in July 2007 of up to $436 069 to Dyslexia-Speld Foundation WA [Inc] towards a major renovation of a building owned by the Foundation at 10 Broome Street, South Perth, the purchase of new furniture, shelving, library resources, kitchen equipment, a telephone system, and the redesign and printing of information packs for parents. Last year the Foundation responded to over 6 000 requests for assistance from across the State. In June of 2007 a grant of up to $26 074 was made towards an information technology upgrade, including desk top computers, lap tops, server, network, installation, training and software. These items will support the organization to maximise service delivery to support children and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.
In addition, Lotterywest has provided significant support to organizations that support people who are leaving school with low literacy levels. This is not necessarily tied to dyslexia. An example is support for organizations that are part of Employment Directions Network [EDN]. These organizations provide support to people who have low literacy levels to assist them to obtain employment. The support provided by Lotterywest is usually IT related, and the equipment is used in the delivery of a broad range of programs beyond assisting adults with low literacy levels. That is, the provision of services to adults with low literacy levels is not the primary focus on these services, but is part of what they do.
Due to the fact that the focus of these organizations is mainly around providing career advisory and planning services to school leavers and job seekers [some of whom may have literacy issues], it is not possible to identify how much of the resources go towards low literacy levels due to dyslexia.
