I refer to Premier's media release of 13 October 2011 headed, Local groups benefit from Big Aussie Barbecue, and I ask:
(a) is it true that the event was made possible by Bunnings and Coles, which were supplying the barbecues, food and drinks and providing staff to operate each stall, and if yes:
(i) what costs were included in the payment of $131,653 for barbeques and food disclosed in tabled paper 4296, and why was this payment required; and
(ii) what costs were included in the payment of $182,204 for staff costs disclosed in tabled paper 4296, and why was this payment required?

Department of the Premier and Cabinet advises:
(a) The Big Aussie Barbecue was organised as part of the Royal Visit that coincided with the attendance by Her Majesty The Queen at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October 2011. Advice that the event would proceed was not received until late September and a public announcement was not made by Buckingham Palace until three weeks before the event. All planning until that point had to proceed on the basis that the event may not go ahead.
Bunnings provided some 30 fully equipped barbecue stalls, logistics and planning capability, and facilitated the training and management of up to 600 volunteers to do so. This group included volunteers from Bunnings and Coles, as well as the Red Cross, Contarf, Legacy and Activ.
(i) The amount of $131,653 included half the costs of all food, drinks, gazebos, barbecues, stall equipment and other consumables related to the provision of food and beverages during the event. When it became clear that the numbers expected to attend the event would be considerably more than first anticipated, the State Government agreed to supplement the original Bunnings and Coles contribution. Full proceeds received from the sale of food and beverages were donated to charity. Barbecues and stall equipment supplied for the event has subsequently been donated to local community and not-for-profit groups through Bunnings and Coles. Bunnings and Coles also provided significant logistics and planning capability.
(ii) The amount of $182,204 was for the payment of all associated event staff contracted by Lux Events, who worked in the lead up, during and post event. Those people did not operate the barbecue stalls.
