I refer to the Department of Parks and Wildlife licensed
shacks at Wedge Island.
(1) Has the
Minister for Environment or his department received a report on the presence of
asbestos in the shacks?
(2) How many shacks are at Wedge Island and how many of those
have asbestos?
(3) Have
members of the Wedge Island Protection Association been made aware of the
report's findings?
(4) What
measures has DPaW taken to ensure there is no illegal dumping of asbestos from
Wedge Island shacks?
(5) Can the
government provide an estimate of the cost of asbestos removal from the shacks
and from Wedge Island?

asbestos report on 12 November 2015.
(2) There are 409
licensed shacks at Wedge and Grey involving 496 structures. A total of 490
structures were inspected externally. Asbestos-containing material was
identified or suspected at 259 structures and in 11 of 17 shacks inspected
internally. Details specific to Wedge will need to be provided as a question on
notice.
(3) No.
(4) Illegal,
dumping is managed through a combination of licence conditions and on-site
enforcement by rangers.
(5) A cost assessment is yet to be
determined.
