WHITFORD CITY SHOPPING CENTRE — DAVID JONES
I refer to the announcement by David Jones that it has signed an agreement to open a new department store at Whitfords shopping centre. (1) Has anyone in the minister’s department discussed with the owners of the Whitfords shopping centre the expansion of the centre to accommodate a new department store? (2) Does the government support the expansion of the shopping centre; and, if so, by how much? (3) What processes and approvals are required before expansion of the centre can occur? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The minister has provided the following advice — (1) The Department for Planning and Infrastructure has not yet been able to determine whether any person in the department has spoken to the owners about any potential expansion of the centre. (2) The government does not have a position on any expansion of the shopping centre, apart from supporting the implementation of the current metropolitan centres policy. It should be noted that this position may change depending on the outcomes of the Department for Planning and Infrastructure’s current review of the metropolitan centres policy. (3) The procedures will vary according to the circumstances of any proposal. The procedures are laid out in the Planning and Development Act 2005 and in the metropolitan centres policy.
