On 26 November 2002, The Minister for Local Government and Regional Development tabled the draft Regional Policy Statement for Western Australia. The draft Policy reflects this Government's commitment to regional Western Australia. We realise and value the importance of regional Western Australia not only to our State and National economies but also to the strength and diversity that makes our State strong and vibrant. The Government recognises that improvements to regional service delivery must occur as part of an overall strategy to support strong and vibrant regions. Piecemeal approaches of the kind referred to in the member's question would not achieve the substantial, lasting changes in regional policy that are required as part of this overall strategy. The Government is committed to achieving fair and just outcomes for regions, to investing in regional infrastructure to build and enhance regional strengths and to supporting creative solutions to regional needs based on quality research and development. The draft Regional Policy Statement is an important contribution by Government, which will begin the process of developing sustainable strategies for enhancing service delivery in regional areas. The Government is now seeking public comment on the draft Policy and would welcome any contributions the Member may wish to make as part of the consultation process.
