325. Mr Scott Leary to the
Minister for Health:
I refer to Albany
Health Campus, which has been in bed state black for months and was placed
under a code yellow yesterday, exposing the dangerous capacity crisis under
this government's watch. What is the minister's advice to Albany residents who require urgent treatment when the
Cook Labor government cannot guarantee them a single available bed?
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! The minister is the person who
will respond.

I thank the member
for the question. I had the opportunity not long ago to travel to Albany and visit
Albany Health Campus and, in doing so, there was an opportunity to talk about our
government's election commitment, which we are very excited about. I want to clarify
the member's reference to code yellows. It is important to be clear that code
yellows are used in hospitals as a way of communicating amongst staff. They can
be called for a range of reasons. They are used as a way of communicating
rapidly with staff about a particular situation; they are not used as a
performance measure as such. Code yellows are very important in a hospital
system for communication to take place.
In relation to the
member's question and the issue that he raised, I spend a lot of time visiting
regional areas, including Albany. We are looking at ways to deliver services
into regional communities. Western Australia has the largest health
jurisdiction in the world, some 2.5 million square kilometres. The WA Country
Health Service is working in a range of ways to make sure that people can
access care when they need it closer to home. We have made specific commitments
for Albany, as the member knows.
