Given the urgent requirement for the new Narrakine storage facility near Williams, I ask - (1) Is the minister aware of public safety concerns about grain trucks entering and exiting busy Albany Highway at the Narrakine receival precinct? (2) Given Main Roads has refused to fund slip-road access to the new facility, what measures has the minister put in place to ensure the safety of Albany Highway motorists during the coming carting season? (3) Has Main Roads carried out a safety audit at the Narrakine site; and, if so, will the minister please table the report? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Yes. It is acknowledged that the new Co-operative Bulk Handling Ltd grain facility at Narrakine will generate additional traffic movements on the adjacent section of Albany Highway. Accordingly, it is appropriate that the developer of this facility be responsible for any costs associated with modifying public roads to accommodate this increased activity. CBH was advised of this in January 2003. It is understood that the facility will not be available to accept grain until around December 2003. (2) Main Roads has prepared design drawings that address safety issues at this location arising as a result of the CBH development. A copy of the design has been provided to CBH. The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure intends meeting with senior representatives of CBH and Main Roads shortly to discuss this and other issues. (3) Yes. I table the safety audit report. [See paper No 1437.]
