SCHOOL BUS SERVICES - KALAMUNDA
(1) Is the Public Transport Authority proposing to dramatically reduce or otherwise vary school bus services in the Kalamunda district? (2) Why have relevant stakeholders, including government and non-government schools, the Kalamunda Bus Service and parents, not been consulted about these far-reaching changes? (3) Will the minister apologise to the community for this lack of consideration and undertake to re-visit the situation immediately? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) The Public Transport Authority is not proposing to reduce school bus services in the Kalamunda district. From the commencement of the 2007 school year, Transperth will be providing alternative transport arrangements for students currently travelling on five Kalamunda Bus Service school services. These services have been operated by the Kalamunda Bus Service and funded by the government for many years, but from next year Transperth buses will provide this transport. The services which will be replaced are Walliston to Guildford Grammar School; Walliston to Swan Christian College; Lesmurdie to Swan Christian College; Roleystone to Mary’s Mount Primary School; and Roleystone to St Brigid’s College. Students using these services will be accommodated on a series of new Transperth regular route and school services. The new Transperth regular route services will also be available for use by the general community. (2) Following usual practice, Transperth has advised students of their amended travel arrangements for next year. Schools have also been provided with the relevant information. (3) Following representations to the minister from the member for Swan Hills on behalf of her constituents, the minister has asked the Public Transport Authority to review the changes to ensure that adequate replacement services are being provided. This work is being undertaken now.
