I ask this question on behalf of my colleague, Hon Alan Cadby. In the Labor election document titled “getting transport back on track”, the minister stated that she would undertake a trial of a shuttle bus service between Whitfords railway station and Hillarys Boat Harbour on weekends. (1) Have funds for this commitment been allocated in the 2001-02 budget? (2) If yes, (i) how much has been allocated; and (ii) what is the commencement date of the trial and its time line? (3) If not, why not? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

(1) Funds are provided in the 2001-02 budget for bus services between various railway stations and Hillarys Boat Harbour. (2)-(3) No specific allocation is provided for the trial of a new bus service, and the following comments will explain the rationale.  The Government is committed to improving public transport travel opportunities throughout the Perth area.  One of the many areas the Government wishes to address is access to Hillarys Boat Harbour and the attractions at that location.  Nevertheless, the minister recognises that, as it stands, the Transperth system provides an opportunity on weekends and during school holidays to access Hillarys with a loop-style bus service that operates between the Whitford and Glendalough train stations.  This service - route 592 - operates hourly between 8.53 am until 5.53 pm.  Further, the service is supplemented by an additional bus route operating between Whitford train station and Fremantle via Hillarys Boat Harbour on weekends - route 582.  That route operates from the last Saturday in September until the last Sunday in April.  The service operates hourly from Whitford train station from 8.13 am until 4.13 pm.  Given the difficult financial circumstances this Government inherited, it is required to look judiciously at the allocation of public transport resources.  The minister acknowledges the commitment to improving public transport access to Hillarys Boat Harbour, and has asked Transperth to monitor usage and demand for the services that have been described.  Depending on demand, the Government will consider providing additional bus services to Hillarys Boat Harbour in future budget allocations.
